Mustefa Abakeno is a smallholder farmer who owns 18 hectares of land near to Agaro in the Jimma area of Western Ethiopia. The farm and wet mill is located 2040masl and is planted with various variety selections from the Jimma research centre. Mustefa has a small disk pulper, which he uses for half of his coffee, the other half is dried as a natural. Due to a lack of water in the area and limited space to ferment the coffee, Mustefa ferments the coffee for a short period of time before he moves it to his drying beds, and the result is something like a light honey process. Mustefa has recently registered as an exporter in order to start selling his coffee directly to buyers, which he is now able to do since the changes to regulation in Ethiopia. He has set up a small wet mill where he processes his farm’s and outgrowers’ coffee, which he keeps separate and dries on raised beds near his house. Mustefa’s outgrowers are all neighbours and have between 4 and 10 hectares of land each. He is processing both natural and washed coffee and all of it is dried semi-shaded.

Tsegereda is 15 years old and in grade 10. She lives with her mother in Bekoji, Ethiopia. Tsegereda’s favorite subjects in school are English and Biology. She hopes to be a doctor when she grows up. In her free time she likes to run with friends in her neighborhood. Before Tsegereda joined the GGRF Athletic Scholarship Program, Ayuntu made a small amount of money to support their family by working as a daily laborer and making Tella, a traditional alcohol, for people that would commission her help. She could not afford the ingredients to make Tella or Injera (a traditional Ethiopian bread) to sell on her own in the market to make more money.
Ayuntu explains how, “education for girls is very important. You get different knowledge and skills from school. After Tsegereda completes her education, she can get different job opportunities.”
After joining the GGRF Athletic Scholarship Program, Ayuntu has begun participating in the GGRF Mother’s Savings and Entrepreneurship group. Here she learned how to build a small business and has invested a micro-loan from the savings group to start an Injera and Tella business. As a result of this investment, she has been able to buy the ingredients to make Injera and Tella and has begun to make more money selling these products in the town market.
Ayuntu explains how the GGRF Athletic Scholarship and her new business has helped to supplement what she needed to provide for Tsegereda to attend school: “Before I worried about getting my daughter clothes and food, now I don’t have to stress as much. I can rest and relax my mind. No one was helping me before. Thank you for your help.”
